Elaine Retholtz is a Certified Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction
Teacher and a Certified MBSR 8-Week Fundamentals Teacher Trainer. She has been teaching MBSR since 2005
Over the years she has assisted Florence Meleo Meyer and Rob
Smith and apprenticed with Lynn Koerbel and Bob Stahl at different offerings of
the 9-day Practicum (now known as Fundamentals) in Mindfulness Based Stress
Reduction.
In addition, Elaine has adapted the MBSR program into models
suitable for use in institutions, having taught for many years in an
acupuncture college as well as in a skilled nursing facility.
For example, as part of a facility-wide staff stress reduction
initiative, she trained the staff at a residential facility for people living
with AIDS. Pre and post measures of participating staff showed significant
decreases in perceived stress and emotional exhaustion, and increases in
self-compassion. As a result of her experience teaching in facilities, she is
very interested in using MBSR as a vehicle for institutional culture change.
Elaine has been practicing mindfulness meditation since 1988. She
is on the Teachers Council at New York Insight Meditation Center, and on
NYIMC’s newly formed Guiding Teachers Council. She remains involved in
supporting the diversity work at NYIMC as well as for the Mindfulness
Meditation Teachers New York Collaborative. She is a graduate of the Spirit
Rock Community Dharma Leaders Program.
In addition to her teaching, Elaine works as an acupuncturist in
private practice, integrating mindfulness into all of her encounters with
clients.
